At Home: Nicky Broekhuysen

This is Nicky Broekhuysen in her studio, which also doubles as her bedroom. Nicky was born in South Africa, later moved to New Zealand, and end up in Berlin two years ago via a two year stint in Shanghai, where she first began to experiment with the stamping process you see in the two works behind her. The pieces, which can take up to two months to make, are all meticulously hand-stamped in the binary numbers 1 and 0, creating images which are disorganized and chaotic in detail, but cohesive when viewed in greater distance. Nicky's studio was comparatively empty to what it had been before, as most of her pieces are being prepared to be exhibited in the following weeks. Next week she'll be showing some of her pieces at VOLTA NY, the invitational solo off-shoot of The Armory Show, and following that an exhibition entitled "Between States, Into Light," opening here in Berlin on March 11 at Pool Gallery.

At Home: David Fischer

This is David Fischer in his northern Mitte flat. David is a photographer focusing on portraiture, having moved to Berlin in the early 2000s after studying in New York and working as an assistant under Bruce Weber. He has a thing for Dogme 95, wilted flowers, and Tazio Secchiaroli, evidence of which can be seen all around his living room. The photo above him is of the band Low, and was taken by David. The rest of his portfolio is up online on his homepage.

Interview: Christoph Terhechte

This week Berlin's biggest film festival Berlinale is taking over the cinemas of the town screening more than 400 films in seven sections. To get a grip on the huge program we met the director of Forum, the section focussing on international young cinema, and talked to him about Berlin influencing the festival now and then, the selection process (2000 submissions each year!) and what films he's interested in this year (e.g.: Mumblecore). Ticket sales start today, be sure to be quick, it sells out pretty fast.

Interview: Carson Chan

Carson Chan is the founding member and head curator of Program, a nonprofit exhibition space for art and architecture in Berlin. He regularly writes for various art and cultural magazines such as 032c where he is also a contributing editor, and advises cultural institutions in Denmark and Italy.
Along with Nadim Samman, Carson Chan was appointed curator for the 4th edition of the Marrakech Biennale in 2012.

Antje Stahl met Carson at his office at Program. He was sitting at a long wooden table, behind his back piles of catalogs on beveled book shelves, in front of him a silver laptop that could not possibly have been ignored, and thus, accidentally became the protagonist of the conversation: laptop as mobile home, as exhibition space, as party or the place where imagination expands.
