Interview: Chinawoman

Chinawoman is Michelle, a Toronto-born musician with Russian roots who moved to Berlin nearly a year ago. Her music evokes images of Soviet Ballrooms of the 80s and Douglas Sirk melodramas, and she's been compared to Leonard Cohen, Nico, and Angelo Badalamenti. But for all the grandiosity, you wouldn't expect that both her albums were produced and recorded in her bedroom. I met with her on a gloomy Friday afternoon in Kreuzberg to talk about her music.

Annabelle

I met Annabelle at the presentation of Ayzit Bostan, my favorite from Munich (take a look at her beautiful summer 2012 collection video). Annabelle's relaxed, yet flamboyant floor length kaftan-dress immediately caught my eye after the style-frenzy at the tents.

Alfhild Sarah Külper

Alfhild Sarah Külper presented her latest collection last night in Berlin, alongside Rafael Cunha and Hampus Berggren, all three having just recently graduated from Central St. Martins in London. The dress above by Alfhild Sarah Külper consists of more than 20 layers, each individually painted in succession.

Vladimir Karaleev Spring/Summer 2012

After missing two opportunities for pictorial coverage yesterday (I had a more than bad stance in the more than crowded Kostas Murkudis show, then finally hurried from there to Reality Studio's presentation to find out I just missed it. Oh fashion week drama!), I began this day with the beautiful presentation of Vladimir Karaleev. I took so many pictures and had a hard time selecting my favorites, so I decided to just give his collection the space it deserves and show a lot of them:

Michael Sontag Spring/Summer 2012

I started Fashion Week this morning with Michael Sontag's show, a designer I've been following since he first presented his work in Berlin. Michael's signature are the flowing cuts, interesting drapes combined with simple shapes and surprising colors. They varied between muddy browns and shiny greys, pure white, muted lime green, gold and, of course (as it seems to be a color Michael appreciates a lot), pure pink. The collection felt like a rainy summer day, just when the sun is about to break through the luminous grey, when you still need to wear something coat-like but can already feel the warmth of the next days. Very optimistic and very Berlin.

It's Fashion Week!

Yet again Berlin faces the biggest fashion kerfuffle of the year: it's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week! Celebrating this and the current increase of super-chic Berlin men, Timo Feldhaus and I portrayed six outstanding and fashionable characters for this year's edition of Zitty's Fashion Book (this is Sebastian, a fellow you might already know if you read this blog regularly).
If you want to follow us and our ways through the tents, hopefully discovering beautiful clothing and eating delicate foods from many many tiny plates, you should visit our Facebook profile, where we'll be constantly posting high quality iPhone pictures.
